This is an estimate, not tax advice. Reimbursement policies and tax treatment depend on your employer, jurisdiction and individual circumstances.

How it works

Distance × applicable rate

Mileage reimbursement is commonly estimated by multiplying eligible business distance by the rate that applies to the trip or your employer's reimbursement policy.

Reimbursement and a tax deduction are not the same thing. This tool estimates reimbursement using the selected rate.

Canada

Self-employed vehicle expenses are different.

Canadian prescribed per-kilometre allowance rates are commonly used for reasonable employee allowances. A self-employed person's motor vehicle expense deduction is generally not simply business kilometres multiplied by this allowance rate.

Mileage reimbursement FAQ

Common questions about the calculator

How is mileage reimbursement calculated?

Multiply the eligible business distance by the rate that applies to the trip or reimbursement policy. Where a tiered rate applies, the calculator splits the distance between the applicable tiers.

Can I enter kilometres for a US calculation?

Yes. You can switch the distance unit to kilometres. The calculator converts the distance to miles before applying the US per-mile rate.

Is reimbursement the same as a tax deduction?

No. Reimbursement and tax deductions are separate concepts. This calculator estimates reimbursement using the selected rate; it does not calculate your final tax deduction.

What if my employer uses a different rate?

Choose the custom-rate option and enter the rate used by your employer or business instead of one of the built-in 2026 rates.
